Kim Jung Gi, without a doubt, is my favorite artist from South Korea, if not the entire world. His ability to work from memory is nearly super-human, as you'll note from his sketchbook drawings below; in which nearly no references were used. His seasoned photographic memory is almost as impressive as the confidence he shows with his mark making. Almost always in pen, he often will (accurately) freehand scenes with ambitiously distorted perspectives involving complicated foreshortening of anatomy from sometimes hundreds of figures, machines, and automobiles in a single pass. The volume at which he produces his drawings shows that he is the product of many many years of diligent practice, and serves to me as a valuable inspiration.

Bouguereau was a French painter in the late 1800s who received much praise and criticism. He was mostly criticized by modern impressionists for his technique (specifically, his excessive use of a badger blender; showing no paint strokes) as well as his tired, traditional subject matter. However, his paintings were indeed very impressive, and his ability to manipulate paint captured a lot of praise and attention. Bouguereau, in particular, seemed to have a very developed approach for painting luminous, pale skin. X-rays of his paintings show that he would often start with very saturated skin tones, but would then glaze over them with muted blueish grays in order to achieve the rich color gradations seen in all of his portraits.
